Getting involved in Get Digital

ERoSH's January eZine provided information on a new government initiative to promote access to digital technologies for residents living in sheltered housing schemes.

Research shows that older people have lower take up of the internet and other digital technologies; in fact, over half of those who do not use the internet are over 65 years. Therefore, older people may be excluded from or pay more for services as increasingly companies rely on the internet for doing business. Experience shows that digital technology can make a real difference to people's lives. Technology can help people access information, increase social contacts, take up new opportunities for learning, benefit from new services such as telehealth.

Digital projects in sheltered housing schemes can provide a focus for engagement by residents and local communities; this also helps to meet the needs of other stakeholders such as Supporting People and the Tenant Services Authority.

The recent government announcement presents an excellent opportunity for ERoSH members to help their resident's access digital technology. The funding is geared towards sustainable projects; hence support will be available for training and resident engagement, not just computers.

ERoSH will be talking to Digital Unite about how we can support this initiative, so watch this space. In the meantime, follow the links below to find out more about the new government funding.

If you are able to share your experiences of digital inclusion in sheltered housing please telephone Peter Daly at ‘Johnnie' Johnson Housing on 01625 870121.
