New good practice guide for sheltered housing launched

ERoSH members were invited last year to provide good practice examples for the Chartered Institute of Housing's Sheltered and Retirement Housing – a good practice guide.

Written by Imogen Parry (ERoSH trustee and Collaboration & Development group member) and Lyn Thompson (recent winner of the ERoSH lifetime achievement award to sheltered housing), the guide sets out how sheltered housing providers can respond to an ever-changing environment and deliver services which 21st century older people will expect.

Drawing on the good practice demonstrated by a wide range of housing organisations, the guide takes a realistic look at:

  • The changing role of the scheme manager
  • A strategic approach to managing services
  • Building successful partnerships
  • Working with a diverse client group
  • Meeting the challenge of Supporting People and other performance and quality requirements.

An essential handbook for everyone working in, or in partnership with, sheltered housing services, the guide challenges some of the myths about sheltered housing's current role and looks ahead to an even stronger future for the sector.

Imogen Parry said: 'We are extremely grateful to all those members who sent examples, not all of which could be published due to lack of space. We hope that members find the guide useful.'

Readers will notice that the guide contains many references to and extracts from the various ERoSH checklists – please ensure that you and your staff have and are making the most of these checklists. Visit our Publications page to download your free copies.
