Low Loss Line turn off - 31 December 2006

BT has issued notification that the provision of Low Loss telephone lines will be removed on the 31 December 2006.

What is a Low Loss Line?
For the past 20 to 25 years, BT has offered a higher quality analogue telephone line product that had been intended for use on auto dialling equipment in order to ensure that devices that transmitted data were given an increased quality of service. In more recent years the quality of PSTN services from modern exchanges is as high as the old Low Loss offering and therefore BT do not provide new Low Loss services.

Many Warden Call, Fire Alarm and Intruder Alarm installed devices have been fitted with Low Loss lines.

What Does This Mean?
This line switch off applies only to those of you who have these types of lines. If your organisation has this type of line, you will have been informed six months ago and have been given a list of numbers to which it applies. If you have not received this notifcation, this notice does not therefore apply to your organisation.

If you have this type of line, unless BT receives instruction from the BT account holder to replace the Low Loss lines with standard PSTN lines by the 31 December, the line will be cut off and no alternative service provided.

What Should I Do?

  • If you are uncertain, contact your BT account representative
  • If you have this type of line, order a standard PSTN line
  • Request that the service be moved before the shutdown deadline - a switch over can only take 24 hours
  • And finally, instruct them to retain the existing telephone numbers.
