Older People's Mental Health & Well Being Conference – Independent & Active

The Independent & Active Older People's Mental Health & Well Being Conference, held on 21 January 2010, was organised by ERoSH's membership in Waltham Forest as part of ERoSH's awareness campaign focusing on promoting the many positive aspects of sheltered and retirement housing and the associated support services delivered to people living in the community.

Fifty professionals working with older adults in the borough attended the conference. The theme of the conference was older adults with mental health and focused on independence and well-being.

A number of speakers talked about the local experience of mental health in the community; telehealth and telecare supporting independence; provider agencies speaking about positive outcomes of living independently and a professional perspective of the role of the community mental health team in supporting older adults maintain well-being.

As part of the conference there was an art competition, with over 30 submissions from the local residents living in Waltham Forest with entries ranging from paintings, photography and sculptures. These were judged by ERoSH Chair Jo McTavish, Cllr Phillis and Yvonne Toms Head of Support and Disabilities, and awarded by Cllr Phillips.
